Greetings, Wizard Writers!
Today on The Wizard of Writing, I thought it would be fun to connect our Astrological signs to our writing genres to figure out where our literary talents might best be utilized. I’ve mentioned on the blog a few times that my mother is an Astrologist and was an Astrology instructor in the past. She taught me how to construct and read natal Astrology charts when I was a teenager, so I thought: why not connect Astrology and writing? It should be fun to learn what we’re best suited to write based on our zodiac sign!
Below, please find the Astrological signs, a bit about their unique traits, and what kind of story will make your writing shine as a member of that specific zodiac group. As always, you are welcome to share any insights or fun stories in the comments section. I always look forward to your comments and questions! Also, don’t forget to check out the helpful note to writers at the end of the article!
Aries
Traits: leadership, combativeness, action-oriented, desire to be first in line, energetic, competitive, impulsive, enthusiastic
What should Aries write? detective stories and whodunits, hero’s journey tales, crime novels, war stories, action/adventure
Because Aries is a sign of leadership and action, hero and hero’s journey stories would work well for writers born under this sign. Also, there’s a tendency for Aries to be combative and dynamic while witty, so crime and detective stories would be best suited to Aries authors. You might also try your hand at war stories, perhaps a protagonist who is a brave leader during wartime. High action/adventure is where Aries will stand out in writing.
Taurus
Traits: earthy, stubborn, creative, musical, materialistic, artistic, food-lover, patient
What should Taurus write? nature writing, music writing, YA/Teen, cookbooks
Taurus is an earthy and creative sign, so nature writing is a great way for a Taurus writer to express their inner thoughts about the natural world. On the other side, there’s a very strong stubborn and rebellious streak in those born under this sign, so writing for teens is a terrific option as well—you can identify with them. You love music, so music writing or a protagonist who is a musician might work well for you. Consider a teen musical genius character, or perhaps a story about a young aspiring chef, as Taurus appreciates the culinary arts.
Gemini
Traits: talkative, communicative, music lover, affectionate, intelligent, idealistic, curious, witty
What should Gemini write? literary fiction, screenwriting (strengths in dialogue writing), unreliable narrators, sleuth/puzzle stories, journalism
Gemini likes to communicate and is highly intelligent. Therefore, if you’re a Gemini writer, you are probably best suited toward screenwriting with twists and turns, insightful literary fiction, and stories with a focus on puzzle-solving and intriguing sleuth-like characters. You might also consider music writing, romances with clever, quick-witted protagonists, and journalism. For a protagonist in your story, consider an unreliable narrator. You are clever enough to pull this off!
Cancer
Traits: sensitive, water-loving, moon-worshiping, imaginative, moody, close with mother, family-oriented, domestic, shy, complex, strong
What should Cancer write? fantasy, drama, poetry, family sagas, supernatural
A sensitive sign, Cancers are probably best at dramatic writing with high emotion. If you’re a Cancer writer with a love of moonlight and a heavy imagination, you will do awesome writing fantasy novels as well. The combination of all the traits will also give you strengths in poetry. Try writing water settings in fiction (by an ocean, pond, river, or lake), and also try your writing hand at supernatural tales. Consider a moody, shy protagonist with a family secret.
Leo
Traits: cheery, self-centered/huge ego, center of attention, fun, generous, funny, confident, courageous, loyal, sports lover
What should Leo write? humor writing, hero’s journey, sports writing
Leo writers will love writing humorous stories, whether fiction or nonfiction. Even if the story isn’t straight-up humor, you excel at satire and sarcasm, and might even have a protagonist who makes a living as a comedian or a clown. Because Leos are confident and love being the center of attention, a hero’s journey story would work well too, one that involves vast universes and bright settings. Finally, you love sports and games, so sports writing might be a place where you shine.
Virgo
Traits: tidy, detail-oriented, precise, loyal, practical, nature-lover, literature lover, knowledge seeker, efficient
What should Virgo write? nonfiction, literary fiction, mystery/puzzles, nature writing, poetry
Virgos are extremely intelligent and detail-oriented, so stories involving puzzles are best for Virgo writers as this topic plays in with your natural tendency toward figuring things out. As a practical Virgo, you may also be suited for literary fiction and nonfiction, and as someone who loves nature, you’ll be fantastic at writing natural settings that highlight the beauty of nature. You have a keen eye for special little details—unique and tiny things nobody else sees—so poetry writing is best for you as well. In fiction writing, consider a detective or sleuth protagonist who misses nothing.
Libra
Traits: social, equal, harmonious, diplomatic, balanced, outdoors lover, good at sharing, non-violent, peaceful, beautiful
What should Libra write? poetry, children’s books, nature writing, journalism
As a non-violent, peaceful Libra, you might do well writing for children as they will enjoy your relaxed nature. Because you love the outdoors, you will also do well with poetry and nature writing, particularly because you see the beauty in everyday occurrences in the natural world. Your balanced, diplomatic, and harmonious traits also lend well to journalism, where you should be able to see both sides of a situation and report with an unbiased view. When writing fiction, consider a peaceful protagonist who is thrust into a situation where they need to fight for justice.
Scorpio
Traits: passionate, brave, stubborn, jealous, violent, secretive, leader, assertive, sexual, workaholic, good with money (particularly money of other people), competitive, powerful
What should Scorpio write? thrillers, mystery, horror, romance, erotica, vampire stories
Scorpio likes mystery and tends to be secretive; therefore, writers under this sign may best be suited for mystery writing, sleuth and detective stories, and thrillers. With your darker nature, horror and gothic writing might work well for you too, with macabre themes and settings. Because Scorpio is romantic and sexual, you will be an extraordinary romance novelist or even excel at writing erotica. Some protagonists you may want to work with include accountants, presidents, and dark brooding men and women.
Sagittarius
Traits: generous, funny, impatient, free, traveler, curious, energetic, honest, protected, spiritual, optimistic
What should Sagittarius write? travel writing, vacation writing, blogging, humor, exercise, spiritual/inspirational
Sagittarius loves to travel, so novels set in exotic locations might be perfect to try if you’re a writer born under this sign. It might also be fun for you to try a blog about travel or vacation destinations, as readers will love your insight and optimism. With all of your energy, you’ll also want to try writing about exercise and fitness, and because you tend to be spiritual, a book filled with inspirational stories or poetry might be best for you to publish as a Sagittarius. A great protagonist for you to focus on might be funny or tend to give witty bits of knowledge or advice. Your philosophical nature and love of books makes you perfect for the writing and publishing world!
Capricorn
Traits: responsible, self-controlled, know-it-all, family-oriented, musical, traditional, serious, hard-working, driven, neat, methodical
What should Capricorn write? literary fiction, how-to guides, music writing, historical fiction, children’s nonfiction
Your musical nature makes you very adept at music writing, Capricorn. Also, because you’re traditional and family-oriented, you may be the perfect author for historical fiction, especially old-fashioned stories with a centralized theme of family love. Because you know quite a bit about everything, you’d be a terrific writer of how-to guides, and your family devotion and responsible nature makes you a great writer of children’s nonfiction stories that teach lessons. In fiction writing, consider a workaholic protagonist in big business who loses it all.
Aquarius
Traits: progressive, original, independent, cutting edge, helpful, fun, unique, intelligent, loyal, hard-working, humanitarian
What should Aquarius write? science fiction, unique how-to guides, speculative fiction, comic books, graphic novels, political writing, astrology
Aquarius is one of the best signs for writers because people born under this sign tend to be broad thinkers and very unique. As such, you will excel at science fiction, astrology and new age writing, and speculative fiction, especially stories with themes of technology (science and electrical). Your intelligence makes you adept at penning how-to guides (and you’ll be particularly happy to help people, too!), and your artistic and fun side is an awesome fit for comic book writing and graphic novels. Your original and modern viewpoints would be great in political writing, too. In fiction writing, consider an intelligent but eccentric scientist as a protagonist. How does he or she help the world?
Pisces
Traits: artistic, gentle, intuitive, wise, musical, sad, romantic, spiritual, sensitive, passive, stubborn, drifter, psychic, daydreamer
What should Pisces write? fantasy, religious and inspirational fiction, music writing, nonfiction books about art, gothic tales, paranormal/supernatural, medical writing
Pisces, you’re artistic and imaginative, and these traits are just right for fantasy writing. You will do great with fantasy worlds with beautiful settings. Because you tend to be spiritual, you would also be a perfect writer of religious and inspirational novels, and your love of the arts and music lends itself well to music writing. You might consider a medical drama, as Pisces are sometimes interested in hospitals, drugs, and medicine. Finally, your psychic and intuitive side might be perfect for novels with supernatural or paranormal plots. For your protagonist, consider an art-lover, struggling artist, or drifter musician.
A note for all signs: As writers, it might be fun to conjure up a protagonist based on one of the signs above, different from your own. Look at the traits listed, and assign them to your main character (or a side character!). Let me know what you come up with using the comments section below!
